Global Bibliography of Prison Systems
Version 2.0

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Version 1.0 of this project was accomplished only because of the kind cooperation and assistance provided by the Centre for International Crime Prevention at the United Nations Office in Vienna. At a time of office space shortage and financial belt-tightening, the CICP provided me with a prime office, an excellent computer, office supplies, fax access, and photocopying authorization. The professional and pleasant staff of the CICP made me feel very welcome during my 12 weeks, but special thanks goes to three people who had the most direct influence on my sabbatic proposal and the resulting project: Eduardo Vetere, Brigitte Döring, and Adam Bouloukos. I would also like to thank Emil Wandzilak, who provided me with documents and citations from the United Nations and its affiliates, and to the Vienna International Centre library staff for their assistance in helping me find needed resources.

The positive reception GBOPS Version 1.0 received, including recognition by the Scout Report for the Social Sciences, encouraged us to prepare Version 2.0. Additional documentation for this most recent version was prepared with the assistance of Ms. Stephani Ramsey of the University of Northern Colorado. Ms. Ramsey worked diligently as an undergraduate student assistant to find appropriate references published since Version 1.0 was completed. Her efforts are greatly appreciated.

Responding to a call for assistance issued by Adam Bouloukos, librarians with the World Criminal Justice Library Network sent information about relevant resources from many countries. I would especially like to thank Judith Forman and Elizabeth Buckley for providing citations from the New Zealand Department of Justice and Ministry of Justice; to Kirsi Nissila for providing information about publications from HEUNI (the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, affiliated with the United Nations); and to Thomas Schiller with the National Criminal Justice Reference Service for suggestions about accessing data in the NCJRS Abstract Database. A very special acknowledgment and expression of thanks goes to Ivanka Sket with the Library of the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Ms. Sket, with the assistance of Dr. Franci Brinc, not only selected particular references on Slovenia prisons, but also provided English translations of the titles for those references.

Finally, I must thank the University of Northern Colorado for making the initial opportunity available to me. I believe my students will benefit from my experiences and I hope that practitioners, scholars, and students around the world will find this bibliography to be useful. My sabbatical leave in 1998 received financial support from the UNC Faculty Research and Publication Board, the Mind/Honors Program, and the Graduate School's Support for Scholarly Activity fund. Without the funds provided by these groups I would not have been able to begin, let alone complete, the project. The UNC Sociology Department provided Ms. Ramsey with funds during 1999 to assist her efforts in compiling the most recent references.
