Special projects to reduce
property crime

Beyond the urban initiatives described above, several situational crime prevention projects have reduced property crimes, such providing as burglary, shop robberies or car theft. While many measures just displace crime from one area to another, thus providing little benefit to a city as a whole, careful scientific evaluations of some rigorous experiments have shown real reductions in crime.

A situational analysis of criminal acts suggests that offenders generally make fairly rational choices and look for the easiest, least dangerous and most viable opportunities. Changing some of the conditions directly associated with the commission of offences could therefore reduce the prevalence of crime.

Because of their expertise and responsibilities, city Governments and community agencies have a tremendous capacity for addressing situational factors. Options such as urban planning and zoning, building regulations and the hiring of staff to monitor public spaces are within the grasp of most cities.
