These guidelines were adopted by the Economic and Social Council on 24 July 1995 on the recommendation of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at its fourth session. Discussion on this topic during the Commission outlined the need for a multisectoral and multidisciplinary approach to urban crime prevention that combined the efforts of criminal justice officials, other agents, victim services, community members and organizations, the economic sector and the media.
